Behind The Scenes: Under Armour/Sports Authority Shoot Pt. 2

Behind The Scenes: Under Armour/Sports Authority Shoot Pt. 2

Todd Durkin returns with part two of his behind-the-scenes look at the Under Armour/Sports Authority commercial shoot last month. Today he talks about shooting with Patrick Kerney and seeing the spot for the first time.

Because we were doing a night shoot, Patrick wanted to get his own workout in that day.  We headed over to Los Gatos, CA and did a 1 hour weight room session and 1 hour field session at Los Gatos HS.  The weight room session included exercises such as:

·       Power Cleans                4 x 6

·       Barbell Lunges              4 x 6 per side

·       Straight Leg Deads       3 x 10

·       15 minute core routine

The field session included movements such as:

Dynamic warm-up
Form running (20 yards)
Resisted skipping  (4 x 20 yards)
Resisted runs (4 x 20 yards)
Flying 40’s (6 of them)
Box Drills
3 cone drills
a.       slide-run-slide

b.      run-slide-run

c.       slide-backshuffle-run

Let me tell you something, Patrick Kerney is a beast.  Traps and “guns” popping, chest swollen up, and the dude had a motor that never quit.  He was extremely hard-working and was willing to do whatever was needed to get the job done.

Once again, what impressed me most about Kerney is his character.  Impeccable manners with “yes, sirs” and “no, sirs” as he responded to people; friendly and good-natured; appreciative, and extremely positive energy.  He was a joy to work with.

I learned a few things from this experience:

Under Armour has chosen 3 class act human beings representing them.  Besides excellent football players, they are good, hard-working people whose attitudes were just awesome.

The Under Armour team has an uncanny ability to spot and recognize not only talent, but locations to best represent their brand.

Continue to surround yourself with great people.  It was an absolute joy to be around the Under Armour team throughout this process.  They are hard-working, diligent, have great attention to detail, have a team approach, and are willing to do whatever it takes to be great.  Not good, but GREAT.

It is amazing to see how quickly things can get done when you have the right people on your team.  That commercial was shot and less than 4 weeks later was playing on national television.  To have edited all that footage (well over hundreds of hours of footage and takes) down to a 60 second spot that represents who you are took a Herculean effort.  There were a lot of people that worked their tails off and had long days and sleepless nights to make sure everything was accomplished.

I got to see the commercial aired the first time during the ESPY’s.  Pride, joy, and pure excitement were the emotions I felt as it played in the Nokia Theatre that night as I watched it with my wife and the Under Armour family.  To see it now on ESPN, I realize all the people behind the scenes that made this thing happen.  Between Under Armour and Sports Authority, I thank them for not only creating 3 types of shoes that will change the way you train, but for exposing the world to some of the methodologies it takes to truly be “world-class.”  It is an honor to appear in the commercial and to represent Under Armour, the UA Performance Training Council, the countless other world-class trainers in our system, and for all those athletes out there that are searching to be the New Prototype athlete.  Through dedication, hard-work, and relentless pursuit of achieving your dreams, the Under Armour Team is now providing you with the tools and answers for you to do exactly this:  Live up to your full potential, dream beyond your wildest dreams that anything is possible! THE FUTURE IS OURS!
