Staying on the West Coast, the 2009 Under Armour Combine tour hit the City of Angels with a stop at Santa Monica College this past Saturday.
Over 215 red-and-black clad athletes took to the field to compete in NFL style Combine drills led by Under Armour coaches George Teague, Joe Andruzzi and Eric Metcalf. Also in attendance was Deion Sanders, who brought along his Prime U coaches including Omar Stoutmire, Kevin Mathis and George Hegamin. With such a star-studded cast of coaches, one would think there wasn't much room left on the field, but everyone was treated to an appearance by hip-hop legend Snoop Dogg, who stopped in to check on several players from his youth football league and address the athletes on the importance of staying determined both on the field and in the classroom.
The star power at the LA Combine didn't just come from Snoop and the coaches, as several great players from the ESPN 150 watchlist came to the Combine to compete and take the opportunity to own the moment. At the top of this list was running back Jordon James, who has already accepted an invitation to participate in the 2010 Under Armour All-America Game in Orlando, FL. James didn't disappoint, as he was one of the standouts on the field Saturday.
In typical Under Armour fashion, someone from outside the watchlist came to the Combine and stole the show. Mar'Shawn Grays traveled all the way from Mesquite, TX and had one of the best days of any athlete, stealing the show in 1-on-1 and 7-on-7 drills.
The tour stays out west this week with a stop at the NFC Champion Arizona Cardinals stadium in Glendale, AZ on Sunday. Be sure to check back for updates from the Combine next week.
