Under Armour Combine Recap: International Combine, Canton, OH

Under Armour Combine Recap: International Combine, Canton, OH

On Sunday, July 5, over 60 under-19 football players from around the world came to compete in an Under Armour Combine held at the Jr. World Championships in Canton, OH. While Team USA prepared to battle Team Canada in the Championship Game, representatives from Germany, Japan, France, New Zealand and Mexico came out to learn and compete in the NFL-Combine style drills under the mentorship of the Under Armour Combine coaching staff.

Former NY Jets coach Noel Mazzone and Under Armour All-America coach Don Cox led the athletes through a warm-up and the testing drills, finishing the day with a pass-catching competition.

There was no shortage of talent on the field, as members of the five nations became one red-and-black clad army looking to own the moment and measure their potential. The energy level was high all day long and at the end of the day there were results that matched that intensity.

The standout of the Combine was Christoph Waldemer of Germany. Considered one of the players to watch in the entire tournament, Christoph did not disappoint. The six-foot running back had the fastest 40-yard dash of the day, clocking in at 4.55 seconds. He followed that effort with a 7.15 3-cone, 4.1 short shuttle and a 31.5" vertical.

Another German player made his case for top athlete: Mark Nzecho. Mark ran a 4.73 40, and had a 32 inch vertical.

Suguru Matsuzaki of Japan was small in stature at 5'8", but his 10'2" broad jump was one of the days best.

New Zealand brought several high energy players including John Nicodemus and Mitchell Crossland-Scott.

While there were several languages being spoken on the field, everyone was unified by their UA uniform and the universal languages of football and competition. It was truly a fun and competitive day that everyone enjoyed.

Under Armour Combine Recap: Baltimore

Under Armour Combine Recap: Baltimore

The damp weather couldn't deter nearly 250 prospects from up and down the East Coast from competing at M&T Bank Stadium, the home of the Baltimore Ravens. The last stop on the 2009 Under Armour combine circuit had a strong overall showing despite the dreary weather.

As usual, the vibe and energy were outstanding throughout the night for the new prototype of football combines, and the competition was intense. Despite gusty winds, there were some very impressive testing marks followed by a circuit of well-coached positional drills that concluded with an ultra-competitive one-on-one and seven-on-seven passing circuit. The combine was very balanced in terms of positional strength, making for great competition and scouting.

The star of the show was Josh Furman, who may have had the best outing of any prospect on the 2009 Under Armour Combine Tour. Posting a 4.39 40-yard dash, a 42" vertical and a 9' 8" broad jump.

When things turned over to individual drills, 1-on-1 and skelly, Tehvyn Brantley, who made the trek from North Carolina for the Combine, absolutely wowed everyone in attendance with his routes and separation ability, completely dominating his opponents in the backfield.

While this stop brought the football portion of the 2009 Under Armour Combine Tour to an end, we will still be going strong in golf, soccer and lacrosse throughout the year. Be sure to check back for updates.

Under Armour Combine Recap: Atlanta

Under Armour Combine Recap: Atlanta

On Sunday, April 26, the Under Armour Combines Tour headed down South for a stop at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta, home of the Falcons.

This Under Armour Combine was the largest yet, with 245 red-and-black clad superstars taking the field in what felt like Under Armour Stadium, with 72,000 red seats under the Dome.

Offense was aplenty at the Combine, led by 2010 Under Armour All-America receiver Markeith Ambles. Facing off against fellow All-American Alec Ogletree in 1-on-1 and skelly drills, Ambles showed why he'll be in Orlando this January.

Brandon Bourbon impressed during the Combine with stellar times in both the 3-Cone and 40-yard dash. Colby Brown also raised eyebrows in the two drills, capping off a strong day of testing overall.

Featuring Under Armour Combine Coaches George Teague, Michael Dean Perry and Eric Metcalf, the athletes were able to learn from some of the best and measure themselves at this point in their playing careers.

The Tour hit its last stop of the 2009 season on May 1st in Baltimore. Be sure to check back this week for updates from M&T Bank Stadium.

The 2009 Under Armour Combine Tour finished up its West Coast swing with a stop this past Sunday at the home of the 2008 NFC Champion Arizona Cardinals: University of Phoenix Stadium.  Over 220 of the top football players in the area came out to compete and find out why Under Armour is bringing the most authentic Combine experience in the country to the athletes of the future.

The athletes competed in NFL style Combine drills led by the Under Armour coaching staff featuring former greats Eric Metcalf, George Hegamin and George Teague.

There were several strong times posted at the event that were as strong as we've seen this year. There were several 40-yard dash times in the sub-4.5 range, led by Greenway standout Shawn Jones with a 4.4.  In the Vertical Jump, there were a dozen scores over 35", including Millenum QB Mike Massey who led the field at 38.5". Over at the bench press, 22 athletes put the 185 lb. bar up over 20 times, led by Apache Junction's Cy Maughmer who set the standard for the day with 30 reps. The competition and intensity during the testing helped make the Arizona event one of the best yet.

That intensity also led to one of the most competitive 7-on-7 portions of the Combine season to date. With such a strong balance of top talent throughout each position, the 1-on-1 battles were truly a sight to be seen.

The 2009 Under Armour Combine Tour is off this week, but will be in Indianapolis on April 19th.

Staying on the West Coast, the 2009 Under Armour Combine tour hit the City of Angels with a stop at Santa Monica College this past Saturday.

Over 215 red-and-black clad athletes took to the field to compete in NFL style Combine drills led by Under Armour coaches George Teague, Joe Andruzzi and Eric Metcalf. Also in attendance was Deion Sanders, who brought along his Prime U coaches including Omar Stoutmire, Kevin Mathis and George Hegamin. With such a star-studded cast of coaches, one would think there wasn't much room left on the field, but everyone was treated to an appearance by hip-hop legend Snoop Dogg, who stopped in to check on several players from his youth football league and address the athletes on the importance of staying determined both on the field and in the classroom.

The star power at the LA Combine didn't just come from Snoop and the coaches, as several great players from the ESPN 150 watchlist came to the Combine to compete and take the opportunity to own the moment. At the top of this list was running back Jordon James, who has already accepted an invitation to participate in the 2010 Under Armour All-America Game in Orlando, FL. James didn't disappoint, as he was one of the standouts on the field Saturday.

In typical Under Armour fashion, someone from outside the watchlist came to the Combine and stole the show. Mar'Shawn Grays traveled all the way from Mesquite, TX and had one of the best days of any athlete, stealing the show in 1-on-1 and 7-on-7 drills.

The tour stays out west this week with a stop at the NFC Champion Arizona Cardinals stadium in Glendale, AZ on Sunday. Be sure to check back for updates from the Combine next week.

For the second straight year, The Oakland Raiders played host to the Under Armour Combine. A growing event similar to the annual scouting combine held by the National Football League for college players in Indianapolis, this is for high school players around the country. The next stop is Southern California.

Some of the top high school football players in the West got a chance to set foot on the same fields as their idols this past Saturday.

Approximately 200 athletes from Bay Area schools donned the Red & Black and got the chance to see how they measure up and learned how to improve their skills on the fields at the Raiders training facility in Alameda, Calif., as part of the Under Armour Combine program.

Players arrived early on Saturday with parents and coaches on hand to support them and to help them to get registered, measured and weighed before being handed Under Armour workout gear and heading out to the Raiders’ practice field.

The players went through football testing including the 40-yard dash, short shuttle, three-cone drill, broad jump and vertical jump. Then they were separated by position groups for basic coaching techniques. Then they participated in 7-on-7 passing drills.

All players in attendance received guidance from some of the most knowledgeable coaches and trainers in the country along with former NFL players Eric Metcalf, George Teague and Under Armour's own Big E.

The 2009 Under Armour Combine Tour stays out west this week with a stop in the Los Angeles area at Santa Monica College on Saturday, March 28th. Stay tuned for results and coverage from the Combine next week.

Under Armour's return to the Sunshine State was arguably the best stop thus far on the 2009 Combine circuit. Over 200 of the best athletes in the area donned the red and black and took to the field at the Jacksonville Jaguars facility this past Saturday.

Under perfect weather conditions, those in attendance were treated to some of the top athletes competing in NFL Combine-style drills and positional drills coached by former NFL stars Eric Metcalf, Joe Andruzzi, George Teague, Michael Dean Perry and Jimmy Smith.

Many of ESPNU's 150 Watch List athletes were at the Combine and lived up that distinction. Defensive Linemen were the headliners and featured three stars: Tavaris Barnes, Tavadis Glenn and Louis Nix. Barnes, measuring in at 6'4", 245, clocked in at 4.69 on the 40-yard dash and had a 32.5" vertical. His times in the short shuttle and L-Cone drill were also tops amond linemen.

Another member of the 150, lineback Justin Parker, was a top performer at the Combine. Parker showed true intensity throughout the day, especially in the position drills and one-on-one battles.

Overall the talent in Jacksonville raised the bar for the rest of the Combine tour, which has a week off before the big West Coast swing later this month, resuming on March 21 at the Oakland Raiders facility.

Battling the brutal winds and unusually cold weather in the Lone Star State, upwards of 120 top high school football players braved the elements and participated in the Under Armour Combine at the Dallas Cowboys facility this past weekend.

The red-and-black clad athletes heard from Combine coaches and former NFL greats Eric Metcalf, Joe Andruzzi and George Teague. They were prepped for action by Duke Rousse, one of the Performance Trainers that is part of Deion Sanders' program, Prime U.  With everyone warmed and ready to go, the day got off to a tremendous start.

Standout linebacker Corey Nelson, who has already committed to the Under Armour All-America Game in 2010, came as advertised, posting solid statistics and impressing the coaches with his work on the field.

Moving from one powerhouse state to another, quarterback Brett Maxie, Jr. showed that leaving Florida for Texas was not going to be a problem.

Quinton Ross impressed everyone from the wide receiver position, and a newcomer, Deion Sanders, Jr., in the familiar #21 jersey, also showed that he will be a player to keep an eye on over the next few seasons.

Running Back Zavian Handy set the bar with a 4.47 time in the 40-yard dash. It was one of several remarkable times throughout the day, all made more impressive when seeing the elements the players dealt with.

The Combine Tour heads back to the Sunshine State this weekend with a stop at the Jaguars facility in Jacksonville. Be sure to check back for updates.
